MISSION STATEMENT

Founded in 1949, the International Association of Physical Education & Sport for Girls and Women, IAPESGW, supports its members working for women's and girls' sport and physical education, and provides opportunities for professional development and international cooperation. IAPESGW, which has members in all five continents and more than 40 countries, holds Scientific Congresses every four years  The 16th IAPESGW Congress will take place in 2009 in South Africa  The Association also organises a scientific programme every four years at Pre-Olympic Scientific Congresses.

As a member organization of the International Council for Sport Sciences and Physical Education, IAPESGW helps to construct international policy and aid work in sport and physical education. IAPESGW has a representative on the International Working Group on Women and Sport, whose brief is to monitor and encourage implementation of the 1994 International Declaration on Women and Sport and the 1998 Windhoek Call for Action.

IAPESGW has a unique role in representing and furthering the interests of women and girls in sport and physical education at the international level during an exciting time. Many national organisations and international sport bodies endorsed the 1994 Brighton Declaration, and there are signs of greater commitment to women's sports by the International Olympic Committee. Since the Fourth World United Nations Conference on Women in Beijing, there has been an increase in the interest in Non-Governmental Organizations (NGO) in girls' physical activity and sport programmes. IAPESGW participated in the 1998 International Conference on Women & Sport in Namibia, launching a dialog between leaders in women's global development and leaders in sport and physical education. Since then IAPESGW has contributed to the 3rd and 4th World Conferences on Women and Sport in Montreal, Canada in 2002 and Kumamoto, Japan in 2006 respectively. The Association has helped to continue and expand the discussion begun in Brighton, Beijing, and Windhoek at the 1999 Smith College conference. This event was followed by two IAPESGW Congresses in 2001 in Alexandria, Egypt and 2005 in Edmonton, Canada.
